Pergola FAQs
What is a pergola?
A pergola is a freestanding outdoor structure designed with open latticework, beams, and posts to create natural shade. They differ from verandas that attach to buildings and are often partially closed to promote air circulation.
What is a pergola used for?
Pergolas are extremely versatile meaning they can be used for a range of purposes, such as:
- An outdoor kitchen area - Pergolas can feature a fully fitted kitchen area, including plumbing and electrics, to provide an excellent outdoor cooking area. This can also be paired with a seating area where friends and family can watch you cook the night away.
- A picturesque dining area - Pergolas are great for creating a dedicated outdoor dining area. Whether you’re hosting in the summer or winter, a pergola can still be an excellent dining area. Just add heaters, lights or even opt for sliding or retractable walls so you can dine al fresco all year round.
- A dedicated outdoor relaxation space - Everyone needs somewhere to relax, but more often than not, rooms are used for dual purposes which can dampen their relaxing atmosphere. Creating an outdoor space specifically for relaxing whether it’s a reading space, yoga and mediation area or hot tub space can help you switch off after a long day.
- A hot tub area - Pergolas are a fantastic space to house a hot tub as they protect it from the weather, helping to avoid damage or dirt build ups. They can also protect you and your family from the sun on those warmer days
What are the different types of pergolas?
There are a range of garden pergola types you can choose from, including:
- Aluminium pergolas - Aluminium pergolas are strong and durable and come in a range of colours, making them a highly customisable statement piece for your outdoor space.
- Glass pergolas - This type of pergola usually features a glass roof and walls, protecting outdoor areas and allowing you to enjoy the outdoors through every season.
- Wooden pergolas - Wooden pergolas are usually made from cedar, mahogany or maple and provide a beautifully rustic feel to your outdoor space. However, they may not last as long as glass and aluminium pergolas as they’re prone to rotting, warping, swelling and cracking.
Do you need planning permission for a pergola?
As garden pergolas are generally classified as permitted developments, planning permission isn't usually required. Still, certain factors like size, height, and your property's location can affect this requirement. At The Oi we’ll work with you to ensure all rules and regulations are abided by.
How high can a pergola be without planning permission in the UK?
For pergolas built in the UK, they can:
- Be a maximum height of 2.5 metres when they’re within 2 metres of a boundary.
- Be a maximum of 3 metres high if they are further than 2 metres away from a boundary.
- Be a maximum of 4 metres high if they have a pitched roof (A-shape).
Creating a cosy outdoor retreat
Pergolas don’t just have to be enjoyed in the summer months. They’re excellent in the winter too. To enjoy them during the winter you can:
- Add a heat source like heat lamps, a fire pit or a pizza oven.
- Add fairy lights to create a warm and inviting area.
- Add a motorised roof or walls to protect you from the elements in the winter and let them back in in the summer.
What are the benefits of a pergola?
- They extend your space - Pergolas enhance the quality of your garden and provide extra dedicated space for you to relax, cook and entertain.
- They add value to your home - Pergolas can add significant value to your home making them an excellent investment.
- They can help to protect your outdoor space from the elements - Pergolas can protect your garden from the elements. If you choose a retractable roof you can experience the sun in those summer months with the added benefit of adding shade when needed. For those with cooking equipment or an outdoor kitchen, pergolas are an excellent option as they protect them from weather damage.
Do pergolas protect you from the weather?
Pergolas are often used to provide weather protection. However, this depends on the type of pergola you choose. For example, if you decide on a traditional pergola with a slatted roof it can provide some protection but will let in some sun, rain or snow as well. Whereas, if you choose a pergola with a retractable roof or glass top you can choose full protection by closing up your pergola during bad weather.
Should I choose a wooden or aluminium pergola?
A common question that arises when people are choosing their pergola is ‘should I use wood or aluminium?’. Below we have pulled together the pros and cons of both materials.
Pros of wooden pergolas
Wooden pergolas are versatile and have the ability to be customised to any colour. Adding fairy lights and vine plants to their already natural look can also make them appealing for those looking for a more timeless feel to their outdoor space.
Cons of wooden pergolas
Wooden pergolas can be high maintenance as they’ll need to be regularly stained or painted to protect them from the weather. They also tend to incur moisture and insect problems, causing the wood to swell, warp, crack and rot. This can lead to the wood needing to be restained, painted or even replaced every couple of years.
Pros of aluminium pergolas
Aluminium pergolas can be easily customised in terms of height and colour and are extremely durable meaning they’ll last against the elements. Like wooden pergolas, they offer an opportunity for implementing climbing vines and decorating with various lighting options.
Aluminium pergolas are also notoriously low maintenance, as their finish lasts for years and they very rarely need repairs.
Cons of aluminium pergolas
Aluminium pergolas have very little cons. However, their only con would be designing and building them without any prior experience or knowledge can be difficult. However this can easily be solved by working with an expert to design and build your pergola.
