FAQs

Q: Do you need planning permission for a garden room?

A: Due to garden rooms usually being classed as outbuildings, planning permission doesn’t tend to be required, but this only applies if you have permitted development rights for your property or the area you live in.

If your garden building doesn’t meet the following requirements you may need to seek further permission from your local planning department:

  • The garden room isn’t in front of your house.
  • The garden room cannot be larger than 50% of the total area of your house.
  • The garden building must be single-storey and no bigger than 3 metres high (or 4 metres if you have a dual-pitched roof).
  • The maximum eaves height is 2.5 metres above ground level.
  • The garden room has no veranda or balcony.
  • The garden building isn’t used as a self contained living accommodation.

Q: How much does a garden room cost?

A: The price of a garden room depends on the complexity and size of the garden pod or studio you’re looking for. Get in touch with us today to discuss your design ideas and prices.

Q: Does a garden room add value?

A: Yes! Garden rooms can add value to your home as they offer extra space and uniqueness to your property that can help it sell quickly. A high quality garden office or room can also boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%.

Q: Are garden rooms a good investment?

A: Building a garden room can be a great investment for your home as it adds value to your property while providing extra space for working, exercising or hosting family and friends. Even if you’re not looking to sell your home any time soon, adding a modern garden room or studio can help you sell your property quicker and for a higher price.

Q: Are garden rooms warm in winter?

A: Well insulated garden rooms can be warm enough to use all year round. Utilising quality materials and focusing on energy efficiency will ensure your garden room is comfortable enough to use in those colder months.

At The OI, we aim to use sustainable, British sourced materials where possible when building your dream garden studio. Expand your space with The OI today.

Q: What is the maximum height for a garden room?

A: Garden buildings can be no more than 3 metres high, or 4 metres high if you have a dual-pitched roof.
